O'sensei as he became known studied various martial arts, Daito Ryu Jujitsu and
Kashima Shinto Ryu being formative in his development of the Budo that would
become known as Aikido, the Art of Peace.
In 1942 he officially registered the name "Aikido" for the first time. Shortly after
this he moved to Iwama in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, to resume his love of farming
along side continued research of Aikido, often saying “Budo and farming are one”
In Iwama he built the Aiki Shuren Dojo and the Aiki Jinja (Aiki Shrine).
He repeatedly stated that it was in Iwama that he perfected modern Aikido and
that the spirit of Aikido was enshrined there.
