Iwama Style Aikido is Aikido done in a like manner to that practiced at the Aiki
Shuren Dojo Iwama of the late Morihiro Saito Sensei. Saito Sensei was instrumental
in developing an easy to understand, pedagogical system. There is a strong emphasis
on the riai (relationship) of ken, jo (sword & staff) & taijutsu (empty hand or body
techniques). Half of the training time focuses on weapons, the other half on empty
hand. There is also a strong emphasis on katai or strong gripped or attacked
techniques at a basic level, moving to more flowing techniques with progress. The
Aiki Kunren Dojo was founded in 2001 in Northern Sydney and is a member of the
Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Shurenkai.
